Chicane Highlights Similarities Between His 1997 Hit “Offshore” and Calvin Harris’ New Release “Blessings”

Recently, Calvin Harris debuted a new track titled “Blessings,” featuring the talented Clementine Douglas. However, the originality of this new song is being questioned, as Chicane has pointed out its striking resemblance to his 1997 classic “Offshore.”

In a social media video, Chicane expresses his surprise at needing to address this issue. He loops a sample of the iconic synth lead from “Offshore,” revealing an almost identical groove in “Blessings.” The similarity between the tracks is undeniable, as he overlays his loop with “Blessings,” showcasing the minimal difference between the two melodies.

“I think you’ll probably agree it’s really hard to decipher when one comes in and one goes,” Chicane states. “That is because they’re almost identical, which is a bit of a problem. I am defending my copyright and my intellectual property here, guys.”

Chicane’s concerns are valid, as numerous artists have faced copyright infringement claims for less significant similarities. A notable example occurred in 2015 when a California judge ordered Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams to pay the Marvin Gaye estate $7.4 million for infringing on the essence of Gaye’s 1977 hit “Got to Give it Up” in their controversial track “Blurred Lines.”

In the realm of electronic dance music, “Offshore” achieved remarkable success, reaching #5 on the Billboard “Dance Club Play” chart and peaking at #12 in Ireland and #14 in the UK. Even in 2018, Mixmag recognized it as one of “The 15 Best Mid-90s Trance Tracks.”
