“Enjoy yourselves, support one another, and steer clear of open flames!” declares Wub Witch while promoting the Lost Lands meetups.
When discussing safe spaces for female festival-goers, mosh pits are rarely considered. However, Wub Witch is creating a unique experience. The clothing brand has arranged not one, but two girls-only mosh pits at the upcoming Lost Lands festival, taking place at Legend Valley in Thornville, Ohio from September 20-22 in the 2024 edition.
According to Wub Witch’s Instagram post about the meetups, the first mosh pit will kick off during Vampa‘s performance at the early entry pre-party on Thursday, September 19 at the Crater Stage at 4:15pm. The second mosh pit is set for Saturday, September 21, at the Prehistoric Paradox stage at 4pm during Emorfik’s set, with a photo opportunity planned 15 minutes after each session begins.
Wub Witch encourages attendees to “LOOK OUT FOR THE GIRL PIT FLAG,” emphasizing the mantra: “Have fun, take care of each other, and don’t use any open flames!”
In White Riot: Punk Rock and the Politics of Race, Maxwell Tremblay notes that the term mosh pit originated around 1979-1980, when Bad Brains’ lead singer chanted “mash it, mash down Babylon” imitating a Jamaican accent. This visceral activity saw renewed popularity during the heavy dubstep era of the EDM boom from 2010 to 2015.
Wub Witch’s initiative for girls-only mosh pits is not unprecedented; similar events have taken place at notable festivals like Reading Festival and Hellfest. Notably, Shaquille O’Neal, also known as DJ Diesel, initiated a mosh pit while headlining the Twin Peaks stage at Outside Lands last year.
Wub Witch is preparing to launch a dedicated homepage for their girls-only mosh pit concept. Stay updated by signing up for the newsletter on their placeholder website.
