“The Acrylic Fabricators building is no longer a safe space for events,” stated DVS1 regarding the closure of Future Classic.
The Minneapolis underground dance music community has received some troubling news today. Future Classic, a prominent warehouse venue managed by local techno luminary DVS1, has been abruptly shut down following a recent fire incident in the building.
DVS1 (real name Zak Khutoretski) conveyed this information in a group email. “Regrettably, this sudden decision was beyond our control,” he noted. “Some weeks ago, a fire ignited in our building, impacting several nearby studio spaces. Given the extent of the damage, the landlord’s negligence, and the hazardous debris left in the area, it is no longer safe for us to host events in the Acrylic Fabricators building.”
Future Classic’s impact extends far beyond that of a typical warehouse venue. Khutoretski established it 15 years ago, and during that time, the space hosted 46 unforgettable events. Renowned techno artists such as Jeff Mills, Ben Klock, and the late Mike Huckaby graced its stage over the years.
“We built something exceptional in Minneapolis that we had to keep under wraps to safeguard the venue,” Khutoretsky expressed. “You truly had to be there to understand.”
This news comes at a particularly challenging time, as he recently had to shut down another one of his initiatives. Aslice, a platform aimed at allowing DJs to donate a portion of their earnings to the artists whose tracks they played, ceased operations in early September. Although he didn’t name names, he and his team attributed the decision to a lack of participation from many of the highest-paid DJs.
Khutoretsky closed his email with a reflective sentiment. “I understand how fleeting our experiences can be. It’s a cliché yes, but it’s true… good things eventually come to an end,” he wrote. “Ensure you cherish and be present in those magical moments as you experience them.”
