Adonis Organizers Respond to Legal Threats Following Controversial Statement
The London queer party Adonis has come under scrutiny after allegedly posting anti-Zionist statements on social media, igniting backlash from the Jewish community and others. In light of potential legal ramifications, the organizers have issued an apology.
According to a report last month by Jewish News, Adonis’s Instagram bio stated, “Zionism has no place in queer spaces.” After facing backlash, the organizers revised it to read, “no genocidal maniacs plz xx.”
The Campaign Against Antisemitism subsequently sent a letter to Eugene Wild and Stuart Glen of DL Food and Drink Limited, owners of The Cause, where the Adonis events are held. The letter criticized the brand’s “aggressive rhetoric,” highlighting that 80% of British Jews identify as Zionists, and contending that the bio could constitute violations of criminal law.
On September 14, Adonis released a formal statement regarding the incident. The statement included an apology for “some instances of offensive language” and a retraction of the brief “No Zionists” post.
In the statement, the organizers described the post as a “flippant, ill-considered retort to the ongoing abuse, attacks & death threats we continue to experience on social media,” clarifying that “no such policy was ever implemented at the club.”
The message further reiterated: “We have & never would deny entry to anyone based on their race, ethnicity, gender or religion or any other protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010. Our Jewish attendees, friends, and DJs are valued and welcomed at all events.”
As of now, there have been no public disclosures regarding any legal actions against Adonis related to their social media activity.
