A stunning new mural dedicated to house music icon Frankie Knuckles has been unveiled in Chicago, showcasing the talent of artist Max Sansing. Titled “Under One Roof,” this masterpiece pays tribute to Knuckles and celebrates the legacy of Gherkin Records, an influential Chicago house music label. This vibrant public artwork is located at the Uptown Branch of the Chicago Public Library, representing the rich cultural diversity of the Uptown and Buena Park neighborhoods.
The unveiling event, which ran from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., featured remarks from Chicago Public Library Commissioner Chris Brown, Frederick Dunson of the Frankie Knuckles Foundation, and DJ Purple, who provided a lively soundtrack for the occasion. Guests were treated to family-friendly activities, crafts, and a festive atmosphere complete with delicious cake.
According to 5 Mag, the mural is strategically placed across from the historic site of Gherkin Records at 916 W. Buena Avenue. The project was funded by the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and overseen by the Chicago Public Art Group. This tribute not only honors Frankie Knuckles but also emphasizes the significant role of house music in Chicago’s cultural heritage.
