Hi Bexxie, we appreciate you taking the time to chat with us! Your recent release “Me & You” featuring The Melody Men is quickly gaining traction! It’s such an enjoyable, warm, and catchy track that has stuck in my head since my first listen. As a master of vocal processing, what qualities do you seek in a vocalist, and how do you ensure the track embodies both your artistic visions?
Thanks! Collaborating with The Melody Men has been an incredible experience because they are so talented and bring positive energy to their performances. When selecting a vocalist, I look for someone capable of capturing the essence of the track. It’s crucial to achieve a balance where our sounds harmonize. I aim for the track to feel like a genuine collaboration, showcasing both of our artistic visions.
Regarding vocal processing, I focus on highlighting a vocalist’s natural attributes and enhancing the vocals to seamlessly fit the production.
With that in mind, which artists or influences have shaped your vintage disco house sound, and how have you modernized it for today’s audience?
I have always been inspired by the uplifting energy and spirit of disco. Additionally, early ’90s dance music, which drew heavily from disco influences, fascinates me. I grew up listening to artists like Inner City, CeCe Peniston, and Black Box, and their blend of soulful vocals with driving rhythms and groovy baselines captivated me. I strive to channel that essence in my music while employing contemporary production techniques. The goal is to maintain the vibrancy of that era while making it feel fresh and electrifying for today’s dancefloors.
As we all know, creativity is crucial for artists, with immense pressure to continually produce something. Do you find it tough to remain inspired, and what methods do you use to overcome writer’s block?
Staying inspired can indeed be challenging, especially given the demand for constant content creation. What works best for me is, at times, stepping away from the studio. Experiencing life outside of music, connecting with friends and family often sparks inspiration. When I encounter a creative block, I might watch tutorials, remix a song, or collaborate with others, as fresh perspectives usually help me regain my momentum.
You’ve witnessed significant changes in the club scene over the last decade. What’s your take on the rise of smartphones in clubs? How do you balance audience engagement with the distractions smartphones may present?
It’s definitely a mixed issue. On one hand, it’s fantastic that people are documenting and sharing their experiences, which helps amplify the music and fosters connections with fans. On the other hand, I feel nostalgic for the times when people were fully immersed in the moment, dancing and letting the music take control without phones. In my sets, I strive to create impactful moments that encourage people to naturally put their phones down, whether through a powerful drop or a sentimental track that unites everyone on the dancefloor. Striking the right balance is essential.
There’s immense anticipation surrounding your Back-to-Back set with Yurie at ADE this year. How does it feel to celebrate your birthday with your debut at this iconic festival?
I’m absolutely thrilled! ADE has always been a dream venue for me, so making my debut there on my birthday feels like the ultimate celebration! Collaborating with Yurie makes it even more memorable. We might even debut a collaborative track there! I’m excited to celebrate with everyone; it’s going to be an unforgettable experience!
What motivated you to start teaching at Cosmic Academy? What do you hope to pass on to your students, and what do you find most fulfilling about this role?
Cosmic Academy played a crucial role in my development as an artist, so I wanted to give back by helping aspiring producers discover their unique sound and hone their skills. The most rewarding aspect is witnessing their progress and growing confidence. My goal is to empower my students not just technically but also creatively, so they feel secure in their distinct sound and artistic vision.
What trends or innovations have you noticed emerging in the electronic music landscape? Are there specific areas that you think require more focus or support?
I’ve observed a growing trend towards genre-blending; artists are merging house with hip-hop, melodic elements with techno, and incorporating influences from mid-2000s indie dance/electro. It’s an exciting creative period with artists intertwining both old and new sounds. Additionally, genres like hard dance and drum and bass seem to be gaining traction in the U.S. It’s fascinating to see!
I also feel there’s a pressing need for increased support for women, gender-expansive, and BIPOC artists in the electronic scene. Although we’ve made progress and initiatives like FEMME HOUSE and Change The Beat are making strides, I’d like to see more efforts aimed at nurturing diversity and equal opportunities for all artists.
With your busy schedule, how do you prioritize self-care and avoid burnout? What routines or techniques do you find effective for managing stress and maintaining a healthy work-life balance?
Juggling everything can be challenging, but I’ve learned that prioritizing self-care is vital to my performance. On the road, I focus on maintaining a balanced lifestyle, ensuring I get enough rest, eat healthily, and stay active. I also schedule downtime for myself — this might include walking my dog, Jack, meditating, or just stepping away from the screen to recharge. Having a supportive network of friends, family, and my team keeps me grounded. I feel fortunate to do what I love, and maintaining balance is essential for keeping that passion alive.
As we look to the future, what goals do you have for the remainder of 2024? Is there anything exciting we should keep an eye out for?
For the rest of 2024, my focus is on releasing more original tracks and remixes. There are also some surprise projects in the pipeline that I can’t divulge just yet, so stay tuned! Expect more high-energy performances and show announcements in the near future!
