Welcome! To start, could you share some insights on the main inspirations that influenced your music career?
“Music has been integral to my life. Electronic music drew me in at an early age, even when I was in junior high. Influential artists like Kraftwerk, the Human League, early Madonna, and early hip-hop have shaped my musical journey. I began DJing professionally in 2016 and started producing a few years later, motivated by a desire to share my perspective and love for music with the world.”
Given the importance of versatility in the dance music scene, how would you describe your approach to music production and your unique style of play?
“I draw inspiration from quality music across all genres. My core genre is house, rooted in techno, but I’m always exploring diverse sounds. When I DJ, my sets include a mix of techno, tech house, melodic techno, Afro house, deep house, and even disco. My production process often begins with a melody and lyrics—a traditional songwriting format—around which I build the track, aiming to convey a specific vibe. I’m keen to discover new sounds and challenge the limits of electronic music.”
As co-founder of Octopus Recordings with Sian, what can you tell us about the label’s inception, its offerings, and the values you promote for emerging talent in the dance music landscape?
“As a proud co-owner of Octopus Recordings, I’m excited to contribute to this groundbreaking label. For 15 years, Octopus has been instrumental in discovering and fostering new artists while steering clear of mainstream trends in house and techno. We embrace risks in our approach. Our commitment to exploring fresh sounds, rather than following trends, is vital for our longevity. We place a high value on originality in new artists, which has allowed us to help launch numerous successful careers.”
Through your non-profit organization, There Is A Light, you’re advocating for educational opportunities. Can you shed light on the vision behind this initiative and the impact it has had?
“The There Is A Light Foundation aims to empower talented individuals who need financial assistance while supporting meaningful initiatives across diverse fields. In 2023, we provided over $500,000 in charitable donations and scholarship funds to support educational opportunities. The importance of There Is A Light Foundation lies in its capability to turn aspirations into reality for talented people who may lack the resources to achieve their dreams. We believe in the power of generosity and hope to inspire positive change in our communities by supporting these individuals and causes.”
Regarding your foundation’s scholarship programs, can you discuss its significance and the role for education and partnerships in the dance music scene?
“Our scholarship program has profoundly impacted the dance music scene. We’ve collaborated with leading music production schools such as IO Music Academy and Icon Collective in Los Angeles, conducting scholarship competitions and awarding individual scholarships. This initiative has enabled many aspiring producers to receive high-quality education they might not have accessed otherwise. The results are evident as we witness these students honing their skills and embarking on promising careers in the industry. I believe education and partnerships are critical in the dance realm, providing essential skills, knowledge, and connections for success. By fostering educational opportunities and industry collaborations, we keep the scene innovative and accessible to talent from all backgrounds. This blend of quality education and strategic partnerships is crucial for the growth and vibrancy of dance music.”
With a stellar musical catalogue, tell us about your latest single, ‘Say Your Grace.’ What was your thought process behind its production, and what message does it convey?
“‘Say Your Grace’ is a collaboration with the wonderful Kenyan artist Lisa Oduor-Noah. This organic house anthem features a laid-back beat paired with heartfelt lyrics. The track is both enchanting and calming, reflecting a spiritual essence. My intent during its production was to celebrate the spiritual guidance that supports and uplifts us through our human journey. It also allows me to highlight incredible talent from African artists, bridging cultures through music and spirituality. The underlying message emphasizes faith, gratitude, and our shared human experience.”
As you continue to make your mark in the dance music scene, what can we expect for the future of The Archer concerning new music and upcoming performances?
“My primary focus is on music production for the time being. I’m dedicated to refining my craft and creating authentic, impactful music for audiences. My aspiration is to share meaningful, real music with the world. I will be spending more time in the studio, experimenting with fresh sounds and collaborating with skilled artists. While I don’t currently have plans for live performances, my energy is exclusively aimed at producing tracks that will leave a lasting impression on the dance music community.”
