“We’re working diligently to comprehend the circumstances surrounding the incident,” stated a Birmingham Police spokesperson regarding the events outside Tunnel Club.
A 22-year-old man has been arrested by West Midlands Police on suspicion of attempted murder after he crashed a vehicle into multiple individuals outside the Tunnel Club in Birmingham, UK, early on Friday morning.
As reported by BBC, the incident took place shortly after 3am when an It’s Freshers student event concluded. Authorities revealed that the suspect “deliberately” drove into a crowd, injuring six individuals, with five requiring hospitalization, one of whom suffered multiple injuries. By Saturday, two victims remained in stable condition at the hospital.
The driver was taken into custody around 9am on Saturday for further investigation. Alongside the attempted murder suspect, another individual was detained on suspicion of disturbing the peace and is currently receiving treatment in the hospital.
“We’re working diligently to determine the events leading up to this incident,” stated Detective Chief Inspector Dave Sproson of Birmingham Police. “At this stage, we consider this an isolated and intentional attack related to a prior occurrence inside the nightclub.”
Tunnel Club has been located in one of the railway archways on Birmingham’s Livery Street since the early 2000s, previously hosting clubs such as Subway City and The Jug. For three decades, this venue has been known for its techno night, House of God, which has prominently featured Birmingham DJ and producer Surgeon.
Local authorities are urging the public to provide any further information regarding the events of Friday morning. “The investigation is progressing well, but we still encourage anyone with information or mobile phone footage to contact us via our dedicated website,” said Sproson.
