UK Dance Music Innovators Anti Up Release Debut Album What is Life?
Over the last five years, few musical producers have expanded the boundaries of dance music like Chris Lake and Chris Lorenzo, who are known as Anti Up. With their highly anticipated debut album, What is Life?, the duo experienced a surge of excitement starting with their groundbreaking track “Chromatic” in 2022, showcasing a raw, industrial sound that they meticulously developed.
Even with sporadic live performances, their music resonates powerfully, consistently elevating expectations with every new track.
What is Life? plunges listeners into the essence of the UK rave culture, offering a gritty, acid-infused experience that explores the evolution of dance music. The album’s fresh take on contemporary electronic culture highlights the idea that each new release can be distinct from the last. Anti Up injects a revitalizing energy into the house and techno genres—an unmistakable result of Chris Lake and Chris Lorenzo’s collaboration.
While both producers are veterans of live performances, a dedicated Anti Up set has remained rare. They’ve stated that a back-to-back set of Lake and Lorenzo doesn’t necessarily equate to an Anti Up performance. However, 2024 marked a turning point as they headlined a packed Mojave Tent during both weekends of Coachella, paving the way for a new chapter for Anti Up and What is Life?.
Leading Up to Release Day, Anti Up Teased Fans with Seven Tracks from the Album.
Their initial release, “Chromatic,” remains a cornerstone track of the album. Following that, a series of singles emerged over two years, including the electrifying tech house hit “Something’s About to Go Down,” which features an impromptu vocal snippet from Skrillex.
Post their unforgettable Coachella performances, Anti Up released a wave of new singles that captured listeners’ attention. Tracks like “The Weekend,” “Control The Media,” and “Shake” quickly established themselves as essential tracks in Summer 2024 club playlists worldwide. Their recent two-track drop, “Freaky Feed Me” and “Outlaws,” featuring Audio Bullys and Olly Burden, draw inspiration from The Prodigy with pulsating basslines, gritty vocals, and industrial drum patterns, effectively blending classic electronic rock with contemporary club sounds.
On Top of These Singles, What is Life? Features Eight Brand-New Tracks.
Highlighted tracks include the energetic club anthem “9 of 10,” the funky West Coast vibe of “Revolution,” and the daring techno journey known as “Shambles.” Digging deeper, “Money” showcases UK drum and bass influences with melodic synths, sharp snares, and smooth vocals, making it an instant classic.
One track that gained prominence during their monumental Coachella performance is “Do You Know Where Your Children Are,” which samples a 1960s PSA from the New York Evening News aimed at protecting children from staying out late. Anti Up transformed it into a mind-bending techno track designed for the dancefloor.
While “Set Me Free” retains their high-energy tech house essence, the album’s finale, “Holdin On,” softens the album’s gritty industrial edges. It provides a smooth conclusion with elegant piano melodies, expertly crafted percussion, and just enough groove to keep the energy alive.
Anti Up has firmly established themselves at the forefront of dance music. A palpable sense of expertise pervades their work, distinctly setting them apart from the contemporary electronic scene. Their unique sound is intense, aggressive, and unapologetically true to the spirit of dance music. The realm they dominate is anything but comfortable, and that’s precisely how they thrive—unconfined, unrestrained, and always bold.
