Josh Wink is an iconic figure in the dance music scene, known for his pioneering contributions over the last 30 years. The founder of Ovum Recordings, he has transformed the label from its grassroots beginnings in Philadelphia into a prominent name in electronic music. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Ovum is recognized for its boundary-pushing releases and unwavering independence in the dance music world.

In tandem with this milestone, Josh Wink is exploring new artistic territories with his latest track, “Nerf Herder,” inspired by a Star Wars reference and a spontaneous moment at a Nerf event in Philadelphia. Drawing from the rich sounds of ’90s progressive house, this release reflects Wink’s emotional evolution as an artist. It serves as a perfect tribute to Ovum’s 30-year legacy, leading into his highly anticipated annual Hallowink celebration set for October 31.

Throughout his journey, Wink has prioritized authenticity, a philosophy that informs both his music and the ongoing legacy of Ovum. We caught up with this legendary DJ to delve into Ovum’s anniversary, the significance of “Nerf Herder,” and the inspirations that continue to drive him after three decades at the helm of dance music. Hi Josh! It’s great to have you with us. This year has been a thrilling one for you, and we’re eager to hear what lies ahead. Before we discuss Ovum’s legacy, tell us more about your new track “Nerf Herder.” What inspired it, and how does it fit into your 30-year artistic journey?

Thank you! “Nerf Herder” references a classic line from the Star Wars film The Empire Strikes Back, where Leia calls Han a “stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf herder.” However, the inspiration came from an experience at a Nerf event where I was waiting for my son. While he was participating, I composed this track on my laptop in a quiet room at the venue. The title stuck with me amidst the chaos of the event, blending the Star Wars nod with personal memories.

Two years ago, I immersed myself in creating emotional and melodic techno and house tracks like “Iz” and “The Deepness,” influenced by the ’90s progressive sound while retaining my signature production style. Now, I’m excited to explore deeper, more emotive expressions while moving away from the techno sound that many associate with me.

Reflecting on your journey, what factors have kept Ovum successful in the dance music industry for three decades, and how do you view its position in today’s landscape?

Our longevity lies in following our instincts about music with passion rather than purely analytical thinking. We strive to release tracks that resonate with us instead of conforming to fleeting trends, as contemporary music often feels disposable. Our catalog maintains a timeless quality, and I take pride in how relevant it continues to be.

Ovum has been instrumental in launching diverse careers. How do you scout new talent today, and are there any emerging artists on Ovum that excite you?

While we have some potential signings on the horizon, my focus this year has been predominantly on my own music and the existing catalog. There’s a lot of potential brewing behind the scenes for future releases.

Having spent over three decades in the industry, what keeps your motivation alive to keep evolving your music?

My passion for electronic music drives me. From my teenage years to now in my 50s, the excitement and love for what I do remain strong.

You’ve consistently emphasized the importance of authenticity. In a trend-driven industry, how do you uphold this value?

I think it boils down to being stubborn and indifferent to others’ trends. While I am open to change, I prioritize creating music I love without succumbing to societal pressures. I believe, “The tallest trees catch the most wind,” highlighting the importance of staying rooted in one’s values.

The dance music landscape has transformed dramatically since the ‘90s. What aspects do you appreciate about the current scene, and what areas do you feel need improvement?

Indeed, it’s changed, even since the start of this year! I love that more people can now access what was once a niche genre. However, I believe events should enforce policies to limit smartphone usage, allowing attendees to fully immerse themselves in the music experience. I feel lately that the focus has shifted away from the essence of “The Music.”

As technology rapidly advances, how do you feel about the balance between traditional DJing and modern tech-driven performances?

I appreciate good music in any format. The variety of artistic tools available to DJs and producers enhances creativity. While I value historical knowledge of our culture, mastery of every aspect isn’t essential. Understanding your craft is key to success.

What advice would you offer aspiring DJs and producers looking to carve their niche in this competitive arena?

The landscape has become quite saturated with aspiring DJs and producers. It’s crucial to genuinely love what you do! Be prepared for the realities of the industry, which may not guarantee financial success or fame. Social media often distorts the perception of success, focusing on superficial measures. Ask yourself, if you didn’t have the trappings of success, would you still pursue your passion?

Looking to the future, what can we expect from Ovum and your career? Are there more releases, collaborations, or surprises in store?

We’re advancing with Ovum and are excited about potential new artists joining the label. Additionally, we’re planning to release a Josh Wink LP, featuring tracks from this year alongside some exciting new material. I’m also working on collaborations with fellow artists and an ambient project that I’ve developed over the last decade, which I hope to release through Ovum. We have much on our plate, and I can’t wait to share it!

Thank you for your time, and once again, congratulations on 30 successful years with Ovum!
