MeToo Music’s When The Music Ends highlights the impact one individual can have through portrayals of sexual abuse drawn from genuine victim stories.
As part of its For The Music campaign, MeToo Music has created a short film designed to ignite important discussions surrounding sexual abuse in the nightlife sector. The film, titled When The Music Ends, premiered on October 23 in Berlin.
The film narrates the experiences of three sexual abuse victims: two women and one man. Each actor represents a demographic identified by the Electronic Music Inclusion Initiative (EMII) as being particularly vulnerable. The narratives are based on anonymous testimonies from individuals within these communities.
Contrary to the actual incidents, When The Music Ends presents two alternate outcomes for each narrative. In one scenario, the protagonist endures the abuse, resulting in emotional distress. In another, an intervening third party prevents the abuse from occurring.
“If we believe in fostering safer environments in the darkest corners of our scene, then we all must take action,” states text at the film’s conclusion. “You can make a difference.”
When The Music Ends was produced by the Berlin-based studio Spilled Milk. The film was directed by Mo Kanaan and features performances from Lujain Mustafa, Justus Riesner, Luna Baptiste, Frederic Balonier, and Vincent Ercolani. Collaborators in bringing this film to life include Beatport, Pioneer, Safer Dance, Ravemore, and Reprise Talent Agency.
Previously, the EMII conducted a study that collected over 600 accounts of sexual abuse from 28 countries. The findings indicated that women aged 26-35 are at the highest risk, particularly those from the UK, Germany, and the US.
