Fabi Hernandez: An Emerging Force in Bogotá’s Electronic Music Scene
South America is a thriving hub for electronic music, and Fabi Hernandez is at the forefront of Colombia’s vibrant community. This talented DJ and producer has gained recognition over the past few years with releases on notable labels like Groove Bassment, One Seven Music, and Soave Dusk. His recent collaboration with Mexican artist Allan Piziano, titled “Al Ritmo,” marks his debut on Toolroom Trax and has propelled him to new heights in his career.
Originating from Bucaramanga, Fabi was introduced to electronic music at a young age, despite the limited culture surrounding it in his hometown. He often watched festivals online and on television. “Even as a child, I remember doing everything I could to immerse myself in electronic music,” he reflected. “This passion for music, combined with the effort I’ve put into accessing it, makes my journey feel incredibly rewarding. I feel truly blessed.”
As the Colombian music scene has expanded, particularly through major festivals in cities like Medellín and Bogotá—where he currently resides—Fabi has evolved alongside it. “The scene [in Colombia] is definitely growing. There are individuals dedicated to putting our country on the map, but it’s an ongoing struggle,” he explained. “Local artists often lack recognition until they gain attention abroad, a common issue for smaller countries. It’s a sensitive topic for many.”
Bogotá’s cultural fusion is evident, and when we asked Fabi about his ideal night out, he highlighted the city’s diverse culinary scene. “Get ready for an unforgettable experience,” he chuckled. “We have some of the finest restaurants in the world. Bogotá is a gastronomic paradise; we could spend days sampling the incredible food here.” Some of his top picks include the Asian-inspired Zekkie, the Italian eatery Storia d’Amore, and the iconic Andres Carne de Res for authentic Colombian cuisine.
While dancing at Octava promises an exhilarating experience, fans of Fabi Hernandez can also enjoy a unique mix he created, showcasing his influences and filled with unreleased tracks. “I’m excited to share a full slate of unreleased music – some of which you’ll hear for the first time here,” he stated. “The mix opens with ‘Al Ritmo,’ a collaboration with Allan Piziano, and I’m incredibly proud of this track. Working with Toolroom Trax has been a significant honor.”
Delving into the mix reveals the diversity of Fabi’s musical style. “I create and perform a variety of genres, yet my work is always rooted in Latin culture. I aim to produce songs that resonate with the traditions and history of our people,” he explained. “The concluding track, ‘Rosa,’ is a folk song originally recorded in the early 1900s. Over the decades, it has become a staple of Colombian folklore. I wanted to modernize it, and it’s been amazing to witness the positive reception it has received.”
