EMBRZ Discusses His Dublin Roots, Artistic Journey, and Pub Crawl Favorites
Ireland may be a relatively small island nation, yet its electronic music scene boasts a rich and vibrant history spanning decades. From trance and house to progressive and bass, numerous top-tier artists have emerged from this country. EMBRZ is among those aiming to invigorate the scene with his signature sound characterized by chill and soothing melodies.
Growing up in Dunshaughlin, a tight-knit town near Dublin where “everyone knows everyone,” EMBRZ found both advantages and disadvantages. “No matter where you are in Ireland, we are known for our love of music and art,” he reflected. “My dad played the guitar, inspiring me to learn. Our family gatherings were lively, with everyone expected to perform, which was daunting at first, but I cherish those moments now.”
EMBRZ’s initial musical influences extended beyond electronic music; he was drawn to metal bands like Slipknot and Limp Bizkit, which still hold a special place in his heart. This passion led him to join an indie rock band during his teenage years, marking his first foray into songwriting. His journey into electronic music would soon follow.
“I always enjoyed electronic artists like The Prodigy and Daft Punk, but it was a random house party where I first heard deadmau5 that ignited my obsession,” EMBRZ reminisced. “It was the first time I could choose the music I wanted to listen to—it felt like my own little secret. I started creating my own versions of deadmau5-style music just for fun during my late teens.” As he refined his passion for electronic sounds, EMBRZ discovered that atmospheric and chilled music resonated with him the most.
Discussing the current electronic music landscape in Ireland, EMBRZ acknowledged the country’s smaller size but emphasized its significant impact. “Ireland has always produced talented artists because we have a deep-rooted love for music,” he noted. “Although the dance scene is small, it’s expanding. We host several festivals that attract big electronic artists, and I think it differs from the scene in America.”
Despite his time in the States, EMBRZ knows how to enjoy a proper night out in Dublin. With “around 770 pubs,” the city’s reputation for a vibrant drinking culture is well-earned. “Temple Bar is a major tourist attraction, and it’s worth visiting, albeit pricey,” he said, mentioning it as the first stop. “I’ve heard stories of pints of Guinness costing up to nine euros—criminal if you ask me.”
However, EMBRZ prefers to start a pub crawl in Phibsborough, just outside the city center, which he believes has the charm of old Dublin. “We might kick things off at The Bohemian Bar, my new local, then head to the Back Page for pizza and a pint,” he suggested. “Next, we’d venture to StoneyBatter and enjoy a pint at Tommy O’ Garas, a pub my father and grandfather took me to watch football matches as a kid. Don’t worry, I was just sipping Fanta; we’re not that reckless!”
Other recommended spots include Walshes, known for serving possibly the best pint of Guinness in Dublin, and Gravediggers, which he describes as the ultimate choice. “If you’re still standing, we’d head to Whelans for some live music and wrap up the night at Workmans, a three-story venue featuring DJs and live performances,” he added. “And there might be a late-night chipper run on the way home—hopefully without any taxi sickness!”
Reflecting on his artistic journey, EMBRZ showcased his unique sound through an exclusive mix. This mix features tracks from some of his favorite artists with recent releases, along with his new single with bailey, titled “Arrow.” “I love creating mashups of my own tracks, so I included one in there for fun,” he shared.
