In a recent interview, Swedish House Mafia’s Steve Angello discussed the creative process and the challenges of producing music when inspiration is lacking.
Swedish House Mafia has a history of abandoning projects, but few might realize they scrapped an entire album. According to Steve Angello, this is indeed the case.
The member of the supergroup and Size Records label founder spoke with Meghan Mahar for Billboard, covering topics from touring to shifts in the electronic dance music (EDM) scene. When asked about the follow-up to SHM’s 2022 release, Paradise Again, Angello humorously responded, “That question.”
“We had an album,” he shared, “but we scrapped it and chose to release singles. We are continually creating music, and when we feel it’s ready, we release it.”
Angello further emphasized that “as a creator, if you’re not feeling something, it’s not going to see the light of day.” It’s unclear if Mahar probed further on this topic, or if it was edited out of the final cut.
The original lineup of Swedish House Mafia in 2008 included Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell, and the renowned solo artist Eric Prydz. Their hits “Save The World” and “Don’t You Worry Child,” featuring John Martin, propelled them to fame during the EDM boom. The trio disbanded at the peak of their success, culminating in a performance at the 2013 Ultra Music Festival.
In 2019, Swedish House Mafia made headlines with their much-anticipated reunion tour. Despite some canceled shows, they have continued to perform and release new music. Coinciding with the release of Paradise Again: The Live Album in July 2023, Angello announced at Tomorrowland that their next album would be released “later this summer.”
