Ultra Taiwan 2024: A Spectacular Celebration of Dance Music in Taipei

Ultra Taiwan 2024 provided an exhilarating weekend at Dajia Riverside Park, merging the global dance music scene with the rich cultural tapestry of Taipei. Taking place from November 16–17, this year’s festival showcased a stellar lineup that not only highlighted renowned international artists but also celebrated local and regional talent, making it one of the most diverse editions to date.

As a long-time attendee, Ultra Taiwan is an event I eagerly anticipate each year. It’s a rare opportunity for major international acts to grace the stage in Taipei, and this year certainly met my expectations. I was particularly thrilled by the increased representation of regional artists and the broader spectrum of music styles, which felt more pronounced than in previous years. Having been a part of every Ultra Taiwan since 2020, I can confidently say that this edition was my favorite.

ARTBAT’s Unforgettable Performance

One of the most enchanting moments of the weekend came during ARTBAT’s set. Their performance was a captivating blend of atmospheric sounds, heavy beats, and unexpected twists. The rain seemed to dance along with their music, creating an unforgettable experience. ARTBAT’s ability to merge expert DJing with emotional, cinematic energy made their set a personal highlight for me. It felt like a masterclass in modern techno, a rare gem for Taipei.

DJ Snake lit up the Mainstage with a remarkable performance, showcasing his skill in crowd engagement and maintaining the energy at an all-time high. With the announcement of his new alias The Outlaw, I’m eager to see the direction his music will take next.

Chase & Status brought their iconic drum and bass sound to the Mainstage as well. Their set was pure joy, and after witnessing their impressive Boiler Room performance earlier this year, it was easy to understand their acclaim. Both acts highlighted the festival’s ability to accommodate a diverse array of dance music preferences.

A standout feature of Ultra Taiwan 2024 was the amplified presence of local and regional talent. Witnessing artists like Savø, Bernie Bright, and Tooki Tooki perform at such a prestigious event was truly inspiring. Regional stars such as Belle Sisoski and Weird Genius delivered electrifying performances, underscoring the strength of Asia’s dance music scene. Belle’s dynamic stage presence and captivating sound left a lasting impression, and I look forward to following her artistic journey.

Regrettably, I missed Hardwell and Zedd as I spent most of my time at the RESISTANCE stage. However, the buzz surrounding their performances, along with the photos shared online, indicated that both artists delivered spectacular sets.

Dajia Riverside Park: The Perfect Venue

The festival’s location at Dajia Riverside Park remained a highlight, with its stunning riverside views complemented by Taipei’s skyline. Dancing in the rain only added to the excitement once you embraced it. The mix of local and international attendees fostered a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere, making the event feel like a true celebration of dance music.

The sound quality at Ultra Taiwan 2024 was exceptional, arguably the best in Taiwan. The Mainstage featured a state-of-the-art sound system that delivered crisp, powerful audio, ensuring every beat was both heard and felt. The RESISTANCE stage, though minimal in visuals, maintained equally high sound quality, allowing the music to take center stage. Thoughtful stage designs enhanced the overall experience, making each performance even more memorable.

This year also saw significant improvements in the variety of food and drink options available. Compared to previous editions, there was a noticeable increase in the number and diversity of vendors, catering to a wide range of tastes and dietary preferences. From traditional Taiwanese snacks to international cuisines, the offerings were impressive.

However, an area for improvement is the use of plastic tokens for purchases. While convenient, the environmental impact of single-use plastics was a drawback. It would be fantastic to see Ultra Taiwan adopt more sustainable practices, such as reusable tokens or digital payment options, to reduce waste and promote eco-friendly initiatives.

A Memorable Conclusion to Ultra Taiwan 2024

Overall, Ultra Taiwan 2024 was a fantastic celebration of dance music. The enhanced representation of local and regional artists, combined with a top-tier international lineup, fostered a balanced and inclusive atmosphere. Exceptional sound systems, thoughtful stage designs, and the beautiful riverside venue contributed to an unforgettable experience.

Looking ahead, I would love to see even greater involvement from the local community, not just in performances but also in festival curation and organization. Integrating more local ideas and talents could further elevate Taiwan’s dance music scene. Additionally, since the festival concludes at a strict 10 PM, it would be amazing if local venues could host after parties featuring international artists to maintain the energy. Moreover, while I understand the reasoning behind this year’s date selection, last year’s event occurring in early December made it easier for my international friends to attend.

All in all, Ultra Taiwan 2024 succeeded in delivering a world-class festival experience marked by exceptional performances, a stunning venue, and a welcoming atmosphere. The blend of global stars and local talents, coupled with the festival’s commitment to quality and inclusivity, made it a weekend to remember. As Taiwan’s dance music community continues to flourish, Ultra Taiwan remains a pivotal event that unites people, celebrates diversity, and sets the stage for future innovations in the dance music scene.
