Hi Alex, how’s it going?

Great! I’m currently working on new music, including a collaboration with my friend Nii Tei, and I’m excited about some upcoming shows.

Can you describe your journey into Electronic Music; how did you transition from classical cello performances at venues like Carnegie Hall to producing and performing Electronic Music?

I was deeply rooted in Classical music, learning the importance of precision and emotional expression through performances at places like Carnegie Hall. However, I always felt a desire to break free from traditional confines. Eventually, I was drawn to clubs and fell in love with the captivating nature of House and Techno—everything just clicked. From there, I dove into the scene. The energy and community felt limitless compared to the structured world of classical music. I started experimenting, and I was immediately hooked!

What role did growing up in New York City’s club scene play in shaping your career in music?

Growing up in NYC and frequenting legendary venues like Limelight, Pacha, and Cielo significantly influenced me. I learned to appreciate the diversity of music; one night it might be soulful house, while the next could be a gritty techno set. That melting pot atmosphere is something I incorporate into my music. I aim for my tracks to evoke that same feeling—unexpected yet always electrifying.

You’re known for blending styles and genres. Which have been the most influential to you, and how do they manifest in your work?

For me, it’s a blend of everything: the narrative aspect of classical music, the raw energy of House and Techno, and the eclectic vibes of Indie Dance and electronica. All these elements creep into my tracks—sometimes without me even realizing it. I enjoy taking familiar concepts and turning them upside down, merging nostalgia with freshness. It’s less about fitting into a specific genre and more about crafting a vibe that resonates with listeners.

What has been the most rewarding part of your journey in the Electronic Music scene so far?

When someone shares that my music helped them through a tough period in their life, it’s incredibly rewarding. Knowing that my creations can connect with someone on such a profound level is unmatched. Additionally, hearing my music played by artists I’ve always admired is a surreal experience.

What significance would you say your performances at renowned venues and festivals, such as Burning Man, Hideout Festival, and Floyd at Club Space, have had on your approach and career?

Each of those experiences has offered unique lessons. Burning Man challenges me to think outside the box and adapt to the moment, as you never know what the vibe will be—whether it’s a complete whiteout or sunny skies, or from 10 people to suddenly 200. Hideout Festival ignited my appreciation for bold, unapologetic energy, while Floyd at Club Space reinforces the intimate connections that great clubs foster. These experiences shape my approach to every set, and I continuously strive to maintain my signature style, regardless of the genre I’m playing. It’s a challenge, but one I relish!

What aspects of the Electronic Music industry excite you the most right now?

The reduction of gatekeeping is thrilling—artists are experimenting, and fans are receptive to new sounds. The technological advancements are also fascinating. AI is redefining the landscape, and shows are becoming more immersive and experiential. It’s an exhilarating time to be involved in the music scene.

Can you discuss the influence of your classical training on your approach to creating electronic tracks?

My classical training provided a strong foundation in storytelling and music theory, allowing me to incorporate elements of peace, tension, intensity, and resolution into my work. I often think in terms of movements and dynamics when composing tracks or planning sets. It’s about crafting a journey rather than merely assembling beats. This background also encourages me to experiment and break conventions, as I understand the reasoning behind them.

How do you see your music evolving over the next few years?

I aim to continue pushing boundaries while staying true to my unique sound. I envision exploring live performance elements more deeply—reintroducing the cello in surprising ways. I also want to delve into immersive, cinematic projects, possibly scoring for film or creating music installations. More collaborations are on the horizon as well; I believe there’s something extraordinary that emerges from a great collaboration, akin to a stellar b2b set.

What are your goals for expanding your music and performances in the coming year?

I’m eager to perform more internationally this summer—in intimate settings where the energy is palpable, as well as on larger stages where I can truly express myself. Musically, I’m currently working on a variety of tracks that I’m excited to share in the upcoming year, ranging from dark and powerful to upbeat and fun.

Alex Cecil’s journey thus far underscores his versatility and commitment to self-expression. Transitioning from classical roots to the dance floors of some of the world’s most iconic venues, he continually pushes the envelope of what it means to be an artist in the Electronic Music landscape. As he looks ahead to new collaborations, immersive projects, and genre-defying releases, it’s evident that Cecil’s distinctive voice will continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
