Hello Buku! Thanks for joining us today. Your breakout track “Front to Back” from 2016 was pivotal for your success. How have you evolved as an artist since that release?
Thanks for having me! It feels like 2016 was ages ago! So much has evolved since then. I’ve grown significantly as an artist. The ongoing challenge is balancing artistic intuition with the ability to step back objectively. I’ve made considerable progress in both technical and creative decision-making, striving for better art overall.
The Unraveled Essence EP is your first release with Of The Trees’ Memory Palace label. How did this collaboration come about?
Tyler (Of The Trees) has been a close friend in the music industry for a long time. Our friendship has always revolved around music. While compiling my music catalog, I shared pieces with him that I thought he’d appreciate. The final track of the EP, “The First,” resonated with him, and he suggested that Memory Palace would be a fitting home for it and my work. From there, I developed the EP, and here we are.
This EP features six unique tracks. How did you achieve a cohesive sound while showcasing your range?
Cohesion is quite a complex aspect. I don’t necessarily aim for it intentionally, but it stems from my technical sensibilities during mixing and my familiarity with structures. My diverse musical influences and extensive writing history contribute to a sound that feels distinctly like me.
The bass-heavy trap anthem “TWM” has been featured in sets from various artists, including Levity and Tape B. What influenced your decision to release this track as the lead single?
It felt like the clear choice! Tyler (Of The Trees) playing it at Red Rocks significantly influenced this decision. Initially, it wasn’t part of the EP, but after sharing it, it started gaining traction. When Tyler showcased it, I realized it had to be included.
On “Time,” you collaborated with vocalist Jessy Covets. How does your creative process differ when working with a vocalist compared to solo projects?
Collaborating with a vocalist changes the workflow, and I really enjoy it. Music production often involves detailing minute aspects, but working with someone else broadens my perspective. Jessy excels in melody and structure, allowing me to focus on the bigger picture. Writing instrumentals can be draining, so having fresh input is invaluable.
The final track, “The First,” fluctuates in intensity, creating a dynamic listening experience. How does your music technology degree shape your creative process for developing captivating soundscapes?
The most beneficial aspect of my education is my grounding in music theory. My sound design is mostly self-taught, but it all ties back to a solid understanding of music theory. The dynamic tension in the piece arises from contrasting dynamics, knowing when to build energy, and importantly, when to pull back.
You recently announced your winter/spring tour dates. Which venue or show are you most looking forward to, and why?
There are several shows I’m excited about! If I had to choose, it would be Columbus at Otherworld. I’ve been eager to perform there for years, and I can’t wait to finally experience it.
As we approach 2025, what is your New Year’s resolution?
I successfully embraced my New Year’s resolution for 2024, so I plan to keep it consistent for 2025. My goal is to continue reducing alcohol intake (except for special occasions). Adopting a sober lifestyle in 2024 has been incredibly rewarding, positively impacting my personal, professional, physical, and mental health. I’m dedicated to maintaining this path.
