After more than five years as a duo (and more), Gem & Tauri “have mutually and lovingly” decided to conclude their collaborative journey.
Today brings bittersweet news for fans of Gem & Tauri. The renowned house and techno duo, made up of Emma Montalvo and Courtney Simmons, will officially disband by the end of this month.
“After many heartfelt discussions, we are closing this beautiful chapter of Gem & Tauri,” the duo shared in a joint statement on Instagram. “We will be performing our final shows together and wanted to express our love and gratitude for your incredible support and the amazing memories we’ve created together.”
Montalvo and Simmons have two remaining performances before they part ways. The first is scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, January 18, at The Midway in San Francisco. The second will take place on Groove Cruise, departing from Miami on January 23 and returning on January 26 after a visit to Labadee, Haiti.
Emma Montalvo is married to the acclaimed DJ and producer Seven Lions, while Simmons is his girlfriend. The inception of Gem & Tauri occurred when he needed an opener for a show at The Mission Ballroom in Denver in late 2019. The duo, who had previously DJed separately, improvised a set that was well-received, marking the beginning of their collaborative project.
During the COVID-19 lockdowns, Gem & Tauri gained popularity through livestreams and released several records, including the 2020 All You Need EP and the 2023 Crownless EP. Their notable singles include their remix of “Miss You” featuring GG Magree by Seven Lions (who is also credited on the new version) and “Hear My Call” featuring Tyler Graves.
As 2023 came to a close, fans noticed that Montalvo and Simmons had unfollowed each other on Instagram, although they continued to perform together. In the comments of a January 2024 Instagram post, Simmons mentioned that she would likely not attend Seven Lions’ shows for a while, adding, “I’ll speak on it more when I’m ready.”
“This decision was not made lightly; letting go is never easy, but we recognize it’s the right step as we focus on new personal and creative endeavors,” Montalvo stated in her individual message. “I feel fortunate to convey this message from a place of love and peace, knowing that this decision honors the journey we’ve shared.”
“After some heartfelt discussions and the eventual conscious uncoupling at the end of 2023, Emma and I wished to continue our music project together for as long as possible, as friends who will always care for each other,” Courtney shared individually. “We found joy in healing and growing in 2024 while processing the changing dynamics. After a year of personal growth and introspection about what was best for each of us, we have chosen to pursue our own separate paths in music and fashion, closing this beautiful chapter of Gem & Tauri.”
As of now, neither Emma Montalvo nor Courtney Simmons have disclosed specific plans regarding their future artistic endeavors or other pursuits.
