James Joshua Lopez Charged in Murder of Amanda Torres: Faces 26 Years to Life in Prison
A tragedy has struck the dance music scene in Los Angeles following the shocking news of a stabbing incident outside an underground event that resulted in the untimely death of Amanda “Mandi” Torres. Today, District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman revealed that James Joshua Lopez has been charged with murder in connection to this incident that took place on January 26. His arraignment is scheduled for March 3.
The 24-year-old Lopez, a resident of Los Angeles, was apprehended and charged earlier today, facing one count of murder along with an allegation of personal use of a deadly weapon. His bail has been set at an astounding $2.02 million. If found guilty, Lopez could face a sentence ranging from 26 years to life in prison.
“This horrific and senseless act of violence took the life of a young woman who dedicated herself to making her community better,” stated District Attorney Hochman. “Amanda Torres was a bright, compassionate leader with limitless potential, and our hearts ache for her family, friends, and all those she impacted. A recent graduate of UCLA and a community organizer, my office will relentlessly pursue justice for Amanda and her family.”
In response to the tragedy, the community rallied together. The stabbing occurred outside an underground event in downtown Los Angeles organized by Space Yacht, CYBER RODEO, and UNDERWAR3. Amanda Torres’ sister and cousin established the @JusticeForMandi Instagram account and initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support their family.
Moreover, the community was actively involved in the search for evidence, leading to surveillance footage obtained from local businesses and homes by Discounted Security Cameras, which was subsequently submitted to the Los Angeles Police Department. It remains unclear if this footage played a role in locating the alleged perpetrator.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Amanda Torres is scheduled for Friday, February 7, at the McWane Family Funeral Home in Hemet. The service is open to anyone wishing to pay their respects. Additional details can be found on the Dignity Memorial website.
