Yana Pavlova: Remembering the Influential Ukrainian Artist and Beloved Collaborator of Pavel Milyakov (Buttechno)
Ukrainian experimental artist Yana Pavlova has tragically passed away at the young age of 35. As of now, the cause of her death has not been publicly revealed.
The news of Pavlova’s passing was shared by her frequent collaborator and fellow Ukrainian artist Pavel Milyakov, known as Buttechno. In an emotional Instagram post, he expressed, “Farewell, my dearest and closest friend. May your beautiful soul rest in peace. Your voice stays forever in our hearts, full of true feeling, inner strength, and melancholy.”
Though Yana Pavlova maintained a low profile on social media, she was a prominent figure at the Kyiv nightclub ∄, a hidden gem within the city’s underground arts scene. There, she curated a unique event called Seredmistia, which delved into unconventional sounds beyond mainstream music.
Pavlova collaborated with Milyakov on the album BLUE, released in July 2021 under the PSY X label. This seven-track project showcased Pavlova’s ethereal vocals woven into abstract soundscapes that transcended traditional music genres.
The duo reunited for their follow-up project, Wandering, which was released through PSY X in January 2022. Writing for Pitchfork, Drew Litowitz noted, “While the collaboration process remains consistent, the results on Wandering are considerably darker. It features harsh industrial feedback and mournful howls, embracing its own bleakness.”
In the wake of Pavlova’s passing, Milyakov shared their haunting rendition of “Song To Siren” by This Mortal Coil on his YouTube account.
At EDM Identity, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Yana Pavlova during this incredibly challenging time.
