Basscon Records Unveils Devotions: Chapter V, Celebrating Emerging Hard Techno and Hard Dance Artists
As winter transitions into spring, the anticipation for festival season grows, bringing along vibrant beats and euphoric energy. Basscon Records is kicking things into high gear with the latest edition of their compilation series, Devotions: Chapter V.
The Devotions series has consistently showcased fresh talent while upholding high musical standards, and the newest installment is no exception. This time, Basscon Records dives deep into hard techno, featuring four tracks that represent 50% of the compilation—a significant shift from previous editions.
Kicking off the compilation, Protokseed, the mastermind behind the Omny Lab label, presents “Breaking Point.” This track is a well-earned recognition for Protokseed, whose label has been instrumental in advancing the hard techno and hardstyle fusion.
Next up, CUTDWN delivers “Heavy Handed Carnage,” a massive hit by the Carnage Merchant himself. Despite his limited experience, CUTDWN brings forth innovative ideas that are sure to resonate across festival stages globally.
Renowned artist Rebekah impresses with “Toxic,” perfectly illustrating her journey from classic hard techno to a contemporary sound infused with hardstyle elements. Clawz completes the hard techno segment with the emotive track “Anything For You,” blending angelic vocals and bright melodies with distorted elements, showcasing Clawz’s diverse production skills.
Dutch artist Spearbreak introduces the first traditional hardstyle track with “Party Girl.” This fierce tune encapsulates the raw energy of the genre with a punishing first drop, a unique anticlimax, and a powerful climax featuring melodies from Hard Dance Heaven. Collaborating with Div Eadie and Thieves of Dreams, Kicksu presents “This Ain’t Goodbye,” an uplifting hardstyle anthem filled with vigorous synths, hard kicks, and soaring vocals.
Mighty Spiritz infuses a French flair into “Destruction,” a track that emphasizes experimental rawstyle kicks and intense distortion. Closing the compilation on a high note, Maddo brings the happy hardcore vibes with “Like It’s 94.” This track highlights the beauty of hard dance, resonating with its focus on distortion and driving beats.
Devotions: Chapter V serves as a compelling follow-up to the previous installment. However, one might sense an overemphasis on hard techno as Basscon fully embraces the genre’s rise in popularity.
The artists featured are undeniably making an impact, yet I can’t help but question whether this focus on hard techno is a genuine cultural evolution or a response to trends. While this edition may not be my personal favorite, it remains faithful to the Devotions mission of showcasing experimental music that defies conventional release patterns.
