Early in his time at KORG, Seiki Kato made significant contributions to the M1 synthesizer, which played a crucial role in defining the sound of house music.
KORG President Seiki Kato, whose dedication to the music gear manufacturer helped its products become favorites among dance music producers, has passed away at the age of 67. The cause of death has not been disclosed at this time.
A statement on the KORG website reveals that Kato died “peacefully” at 8pm on February 21 “following an illness” that remains unspecified. “We extend our heartfelt gratitude for the kindness and support he received during his lifetime and respectfully share this news with you,” the statement conveys.
Born in Tokyo in 1957, Kato studied marine science at Tokai University. He began his career with KORG in 1980, when the company was still known as Keio Giken Kogyo Co., and during the tenure of his late father, Tsutomo Kato, who was leading the company at the time.
KORG, which had already gained popularity among session musicians with its Doncamatic disk rotary rhythm machine since 1963, found renewed success in the electronic music scene largely due to Seiki Kato’s influence. Serving as head of product planning, Kato played a pivotal role in the creation of the M1 synthesizer, which became an essential tool in the burgeoning house music genre that emerged from Chicago’s vibrant gay, Black, and Latino communities.
Iconic dance tracks such as “Show Me Love” by Robin S, “Gypsy Woman” by Crystal Waters, and even Madonna’s “Vogue” prominently featured the M1’s organ preset. This synthesizer remains one of the best-selling products in KORG’s extensive lineup, solidifying its legacy in music history.
“Throughout his career, Seiki Kato made significant contributions to the music industry,” the statement notes. “For decades, he was a driving force behind KORG’s success, earning deep respect and trust from colleagues and industry partners alike. The instruments he helped develop have empowered musicians worldwide, shaping the future of music and artistic expression.”
We at EDM Identity extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Seiki Kato during this difficult time.
