Hi UMEK, thank you for taking the time to connect with us today. We’re eager to learn about your latest release and your journey ahead. How did the collaboration for “Reloaded” materialize, and what was the creative process like for both of you?
I’ve known Sam for quite some time now. We first met during the COVID era and started having multiple jam sessions together. Our workflow is very organic—sometimes he’ll expand on my ideas, other times I’ll delve into his, and that’s where the magic happens. Working with someone like Sam is a blast.
How did you navigate your distinct styles to produce a cohesive track? Were there any challenges or unexpected harmonies?
Although we have different styles, we operate in the same genre, which makes collaboration effortless. I truly enjoy working with Sam; it’s fun and genuinely fulfilling. That’s how collaboration should be, in my opinion.
Can we look forward to more projects between the two of you in the future?
Definitely. We have another track in the works that has been part of our sets for a while. It’s a unique piece that incorporates intense vocals in a peak-time techno format. It may sound a bit unusual, but the track is truly original and distinct. That’s going to be our next venture.
After over 25 years in the industry, what changes have you observed in the music scene, and how have these shifts shaped your musical approach today?
I’m still filled with excitement after 25 years. The scene has transformed drastically. In the past, I relied on around 40 synthesizers and various studio equipment. Now, I can create everything on my computer. For instance, I can work while traveling; if I have a 12-hour flight and I don’t sleep, that’s time for music. I can create while relaxing on a beach with my wife. The mobility aspect has changed significantly because you no longer need a dedicated or professional studio.
What continues to inspire and motivate you in your career today? Are there any specific projects or aspirations you’re actively pursuing?
My motivation remains much the same as when I started. It’s all about discovering new concepts, even though I have a wealth of knowledge. Learning is a continuous journey. There are always new plugins and innovative techniques to explore. Occasionally, I encounter the new generation of producers, whose perspectives on music are refreshingly different, which is always inspiring. I feel this eagerness to learn will be with me for life.
What are your thoughts on the influx of young talent in the techno scene right now?
The techno scene is more vibrant than ever, boasting a plethora of talented young artists and exciting new DJs. However, it’s also facing challenges; there are many less-skilled individuals performing globally who have managed to secure numerous gigs. This situation has arisen due to technological advancements, which have made it easier than ever to become a DJ. Individuals with minimal technical abilities but strong social media followings are often taking advantage of this landscape. As a result, I believe the production and DJing skills among many new entrants are at an all-time low.
Finally, are there any recent advancements in music technology or production methods that have piqued your interest?
Absolutely, there’s always something remarkable emerging weekly. I’m grateful for the digital age we live in, as it simplifies the development of new software tools. In the past, creating new machines demanded extensive hardware resources, along with navigating distribution and sales challenges. Now, numerous small companies are achieving groundbreaking innovations. I check online daily for new plugins, and whenever I discover something exceptional, I seamlessly integrate it into my production. I truly enjoy this newfound workflow.
