Hello Alexa! We’re thrilled to have you here. Thank you for chatting with us!
Thank you! I’m excited to be here; it’s great to connect!
This year has been quite dynamic for you. Before we dive in, can you share your background and how your music journey began? When did you first connect with electronic music?
My love for house music started in childhood. My dad’s passion introduced me to it before I could even walk. Every birthday, car ride, and gathering for the past 26 years has revolved around house music. It was during my college years, especially a vivid trip to Ibiza at 19, that solidified my commitment to the scene. I distinctly remember asserting, “I can’t return to the States without bringing this music back with me.” That was the spark for my journey.
What or who motivated you to start DJing and producing music? Your admiration for Purple Disco Machine and Junior Jack is notable. How have their works influenced your own music?
My overseas experiences prompted me to explore music beyond mere listening. Initially, I acquired the essential DJ equipment after discussions with friends and utilized online resources to teach myself. Learning to read crowds and set the right vibe was my top priority.
Years later, I realized enhancing my production skills would greatly benefit my artistry. I was fortunate to collaborate with talented individuals who helped me articulate my vision and bring it to fruition. The rich sounds of disco—hats, percussion, and piano—have inspired me greatly, as have the artists I look up to, fueling my creativity.
Your career has rapidly evolved from Los Angeles to international performances in places like Croatia. How has that journey shaped your sound?
My career has accelerated tremendously; it often feels surreal! Transitioning from local gigs in LA to international stages has been extraordinary. Each location presents its own energy, culture, and audience, which have collectively molded me as both a DJ and an artist. Performing for diverse crowds illustrates how music transcends language and geographical boundaries. The swift pace has invigorated my creativity, inspiring continual growth and experimentation with my sound.
With 14 years as a competitive dancer, has this artistry impacted your approach to production and DJing?
I’m immensely grateful for my dance background. It has allowed me to emotionally connect with music and movement. Its influence now primarily manifests on the dancefloor, as I strive to engage and inspire audiences through movement at my gigs, promoting a deeper connection to the music.
Your latest single, “What You Do,” has just been released — congratulations! What inspired you to reimagine “Genie in a Bottle” as a club-ready house track?
Thank you! Sometimes inspiration strikes in unexpected places; in this case, I was at a coffee shop when the idea hit me. I often incorporate reimagined Christina Aguilera songs into my sets, and I realized the iconic chorus would resonate in a club setting.
Given my previous work remixing songs by female vocalists, I sought to create a club-ready vibe. Initially, the sound resembled a disco beach club groove, but as I layered sounds, a deeper bassline emerged, perfectly complementing the vocals. I’m thrilled with the final result, as it fits various moments in a night.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from another artist that has profoundly impacted you?
It may sound cliche, but an artist once told me that if I believe in myself, everything else will follow. In today’s competitive landscape, where many are trying to make their mark as DJs and producers, self-belief is crucial. The more I invest in my own authenticity, the more confident I feel at gigs and with my content. A favorite lyric from one of my idols encapsulates this philosophy: “Who am I to be here? Climbing all my fears like they’re nothing but a mountain with a view like there’s never been a dream I can’t pursue… but who am I not to be?” This line resonates with me each time I step on stage.
With your third single launched and a promising 2024 ahead, can you tease any exciting projects or collaborations on the horizon?
Absolutely! I’m dedicated to producing club-ready tracks that align with my personal sound, and I’m eager to share them. Collaborating with fresh vocalists and diving into original songwriting is an exhilarating endeavor for me.
On a different note, you’re actively involved with philanthropy through The Change Reaction. How did you connect with this organization, and why is this cause significant for you?
The Change Reaction, a direct giving platform, focuses on providing emergency grants to hardworking families. For over four years, I’ve concentrated on supporting foster youth who’ve aged out of the system and women affected by domestic violence and sexual assault. Each day, I review stories of struggle and hardship, personally authorizing grants to assist with vital needs like rent and car repairs.
Focusing on hardworking individuals allows me to engage with myriad causes, empowering me to uplift those in my community. My life feels incredibly rewarding as I strive to bring joy to others, both musically and through acts of kindness.
What do you aspire to accomplish in the next phase of your DJ and production career?
My aim as a DJ is to continuously bring joy to the dancefloor. Through my music and performances, I intend to expand this vision across the U.S., introducing audiences to the rich sounds of deep funk and reimagined house music, which have profoundly influenced me. I believe everyone deserves to experience music in a heartfelt way, and I hope to connect with listeners around the world through my DJing and production.
