The prominent social media platform TikTok has officially revealed the impending shutdown of its dedicated music app, TikTok Music. The initiative for TikTok Music traces back to the summer of 2022, when the platform sought to create its own music streaming service, developed by ByteDance, the Chinese internet technology company. ByteDance previously introduced an app called Resso, which was launched in India in early 2020 before rebranding to TikTok Music in the summer of 2023.
Despite facing a ban in India, TikTok Music successfully launched in Brazil and Indonesia, and it also expanded into Australia, Mexico, and Singapore, where users were invited to engage in a closed beta test. Currently, TikTok Music announced its impending closure for November 28th, urging users to transfer their playlists by October 28th (notably to platforms like Spotify and SoundCloud) and to initiate refund requests by the app’s closure date. After November 28th, all user accounts, including personal data, will be automatically deleted.
Ole Obermann, Global Head of Music Business Development at ByteDance, Addresses TikTok Music Shutdown
“Our ‘Add to Music’ App feature has facilitated hundreds of millions of track saves to playlists on partner music streaming services. The decision to close TikTok Music at the end of November aligns with our focus on enhancing TikTok’s impact on music listening and the overall value within music streaming services, benefiting artists, songwriters, and the industry.”
