A Tribute to Achim Szepanski: Visionary of German Techno Culture
Ripples of sorrow have enveloped the German techno scene following the passing of renowned writer and label founder Achim Szepanski, who departed this life on September 25 at the age of 67.
His publisher, Gallery of Offbeat Arts, shared the tragic news in an official statement. An English translation reads, “Our author, friend, and comrade Achim Szepanski was found lifeless in his apartment yesterday. Achim was truly one-of-a-kind in our community, something extraordinarily rare.”
The statement elaborates: “Extremely intelligent and sensitive, he was bluntly critical—even in his challenge against the hollow radical leftist attitudes of today. In personal discourse, however, Achim displayed a surprising delicacy and attentiveness. His voice resonates in our memories, reminding us of what we have lost: a voice that echoed desperation amidst the oppressive forces of global capitalism and its recent escalations of terror.”
Szepanski’s contributions to art and culture transcend his leadership of notable labels like Force Inc. and Millie Plateaux. An influential figure in Frankfurt’s underground scene, he was a frequent visitor to iconic clubs such as Dorian Gray and Omen since the 1980s. His literary works, including Capitalism in the Age of Catastrophe and In the Delirium of the Simulation, are laden with astute social critiques.
Szepanski’s deep contemplation of techno music is also noteworthy. In a 1994 interview with German scholar Katja Diefenbach, he articulated his belief that the genre’s focus on artistic noise represents a necessary departure from the rigid musical standards set by Western institutions.
At EDM Identity, we extend our heartfelt condolences to all of Achim Szepanski’s family, friends, and colleagues during this profoundly challenging time.
