Collaboration Insights from Felix Cartal and Tegan and Sara
“Working with artists you admire can be intimidating. Tegan and Sara have a remarkable career filled with achievements that almost overwhelmed me while finishing our song. They suggested, ‘Let’s make it a big anthem,’ which I found refreshing. It took me about 30 versions to get it just right, but I took my time because I wanted all of us to love it. Their early embrace of dance music before it became mainstream is incredibly inspiring and authentic. I feel honored to collaborate with such respected artists and grateful they wanted to create this song together. Hope you enjoy it!” – Felix Cartal
“Felix and I met several times over coffee this past year to talk about music and our creative inspirations. We decided to collaborate, and I shared my love for 90s dance music, even singing ‘Rhythm Is A Dancer’ multiple times in the studio to ignite some inspiration. It worked! I aimed for the lyrics to transport listeners to another time or place. Although it’s been two decades since I danced all night, I vividly remember the euphoric freedom of being in a club, losing my inhibitions, and letting the music take me away. At raves, Sara and I found community and a sense of belonging. While we didn’t pursue careers as dance artists or DJs, our experiences in Calgary’s electronic music scene in the 90s undoubtedly influenced our artistic paths. The lyrics, ‘You’re like a fever burning in my mind, the hotter it gets, the more I leave behind,’ encapsulate the essence of the song. Whether it’s a person, a perfect night, an unforgettable moment, or an amazing song, the right feeling can transport you anywhere.” – Tegan of Tegan and Sara
