Röyksopp Delights Fans with Nebulous Nights: An Ambient Album for Exploration and Possibility
Röyksopp has quietly unveiled the second installment of their Profound Mysteries trilogy, titled Nebulous Nights (An Ambient Excursion Into Profound Mysteries), today, Friday the 13th, through Dog Triumph.
Following the rave reviews of the first volume, Nebulous Nights encourages listeners to engage their “critical thinking and curious pondering skills,” fostering personal growth and an expanded mindset.
The album features what appears to be the voices of psychologists and spiritual guides, subtly woven throughout the tracks. This audio element drifts beneath the synth lines, acting as a detached voice guiding listeners on their introspective journey.
Described as an “ambient excursion,” this 30-track album is a cinematic experience, leading listeners through an imagined film, scene by scene. Richly detailed, layered sounds flow seamlessly, creating a captivating auditory landscape.
With its dynamic rise and fall, the album ebbs and flows. Harmonious yet ominous synths build suspense, while lighter, ethereal sounds support the heavenly vocals of featured artist Susanne Sundfør, akin to a film accompanied by the director’s insights.
Longtime fans of Röyksopp will find much to cherish in Nebulous Nights. The album is sprinkled with Easter eggs inspired by the duo’s enigmatic history, offering a nostalgic experience for superfans.
Profound Mysteries marks a new chapter for Röyksopp, as they shift away from traditional album formats to embrace a new era of artistic expression. The first volume of the Profound Mysteries series comprises ten tracks, each paired with a short film.
Röyksopp joins a growing roster of producers exploring the ambient genre, alongside artists like Moby and Yotto, who have also released acclaimed ambient albums in recent years.
Nebulous Nights (An Ambient Excursion Into Profound Mysteries) is now available for streaming on all major platforms.
