Skysia Discusses His Red Rocks Performance, Overture Remixes, and Artist Burnout Prevention

When envisioning the artist Skysia, one imagines vibrant and diverse soundscapes. In recent years, Skysia has experienced remarkable growth, consistently achieving new milestones. Reflecting on our previous conversation from two years ago, during the early phases of his career, it’s astonishing to see his progress. From releasing his debut album to opening for LSZEE at the legendary Red Rocks, Skysia has not only refined his craft but also unlocked his full artistic potential.

Hey Skysia! Thanks for joining us today.

Your recent Overture remix album features many notable artists. How did you decide which artists would remix each track?

I’ve been a long-time fan of all those artists! It was an honor to have them contribute to this project. I allowed each artist to choose the track they wanted to remix, which typically leads to better results. I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out!

Which artist surprised you the most with their remix and why?

That’s a tough question. I love every remix and have admired each of these artists for years. They all delivered amazing renditions. One that really surprised me was the Murkury remix of “Aperture.” I wasn’t expecting a dnb twist at all, and it truly caught me off guard. Hearing it for the first time was a special experience—I played it on repeat and felt a wave of emotions. It was a journey!

You had the opportunity to open for LSZEE at Red Rocks earlier this year, which is an incredible achievement! How did it feel to walk through that iconic tunnel, where so many legends have been before you?

It was such a beautiful experience! It was hard to fully absorb everything at once. So many thoughts were racing through my mind. [Laughs] I spent some time in there and found it amusing that I couldn’t spot many names. There are just so many; you’d need hours to find certain ones. But it was definitely surreal!

CloZee and LSDREAM selecting you for such a monumental night must affirm your project’s trajectory. How does it feel to reflect on your journey over the past two years?

I’m incredibly grateful to be where I am now. I owe a huge thanks to artists like CloZee and LSDream for providing incredible opportunities for emerging artists like myself.

This industry can be intense. As an artist, I’m constantly pushing myself to improve and hone my craft. Sometimes, it’s tough to pause and appreciate my journey, but this year—especially after Red Rocks—I’ve taken time for gratitude. I let myself feel proud of how far I’ve come, and I definitely shed a few happy tears after my set at Red Rocks. It was an emotional moment!

In our last interview, you mentioned a feature film you created for your debut album. Have you worked on any new films since then?

Yes! We finally have plans to release that film in early 2025. I’m excited to share it with everyone. I spent a lot of time submitting it to various film festivals, which is why we couldn’t release it until now.

At the moment, there are no new films in the works, but I anticipate returning to that in the future, as I love storytelling. I want to wait for a project that truly needs a visual element—perhaps a future album will inspire another film!

In our previous chat, you emphasized the importance of balance in this industry. How has your perspective evolved over the past two years, and what advice do you have for new artists to avoid burnout?

Taking breaks is essential. Breaks are okay! You’re not a failure for needing time off! [Laughs]

My approach has evolved over time. I initially tried to take breaks a couple of days a week, but now I tend to work intensely for several weeks to a month, followed by a week or two off.

Another crucial tip is to prioritize life experiences. In the beginning, I was obsessed with music—my thoughts revolved around it constantly. Over time, I realized that taking a step back from that mindset is vital. We need human experiences. Spending quality time with family and friends, going on hikes, and taking short trips can offer your mind a much-needed break and inspire more creativity.

If you could choose one mantra to live by, what would it be and why?

Patience. That’s it—just patience. [Laughs]

Finally, after all your achievements this year, do you have any big plans for your project in 2025?

I’m planning a tour for early 2025, which I’m very excited about! Beyond that, I hope to play fewer shows this year to focus on writing. I have numerous musical ideas I want to explore, but balancing that with touring and preparing for sets can be challenging. I love performing, but I’m still learning how to manage these aspects. So, definitely stay tuned for new music in 2025!
