Drumcode Records has consistently stood as a benchmark for excellence within the independent record label sphere of the dance and electronic music landscape. Established in 1996 by Adam Beyer, the label has been a driving force in popularizing techno, and after 28 years, its momentum shows no signs of slowing down. With a remarkable lineup of releases and an extensive touring calendar this year, Drumcode has solidified its position as one of the leading labels in the dance/electronic genre, earning the title of Dancing Astronaut’s 2024 Label of the Year.
The label’s 2024 release schedule exemplifies a harmonious blend of quantity and quality. This is evident not only in the tracks produced but also in the caliber of artists associated with it. Over the past year, Drumcode has showcased works from a stellar lineup of underground A-listers, including Eli Brown, HI-LO, Massano, Layton Giordani, Vintage Culture, Odd Mob, and the label’s founder. Eight of the top 10 Beatport Techno Peak artists released tracks through the label this year, contributing to Drumcode’s impressive achievement of becoming the best-selling Techno Peak label on Beatport, with over 130,000 sales. In 2024, Drumcode’s music amassed over 155 hours of streaming across various digital platforms, driven by hit releases like “When I Push” (Eli Brown, Layton Giordani, OFFAIAH), “PATT (Party All The Time) [Adam Beyer, Layton Giordani & Green Velvet Remix],” and “Simulator (Odd Mob Remix)” (Adam Beyer, Green Velvet), which dominated both streaming services and live performances.
However, the case for Label of the Year cannot solely rely on music, and for Drumcode, this is merely the beginning. Few labels in the dance/electronic scene can rival Drumcode’s expansive global presence. Beyer’s brand has been a staple at festivals across five continents, and the label hosted its first-ever tour in Asia, alongside its largest UK event at The Drumsheds in March. Drumcode sold over 91,000 tickets for its branded events in 2024. While the label’s impressive catalog of releases reinforces its status as a top contender this year, its dynamic touring schedule and significant influence in the live music sector ultimately affirm its position as a leading label.
It is also important to recognize Drumcode’s remarkable longevity. It is truly exceptional for a label that has thrived for nearly three decades to maintain such a fresh and innovative approach, especially in the dance/electronic genre, where sustainability is rare. Even after all these years, Drumcode remains at the forefront of techno—a genre that continues to thrive—while operating as an independent label, a testament to Beyer and his team’s enduring vision.
Drumcode’s mission statement begins with, “Drumcode is more than a label, it’s a movement.” This sentiment was particularly resonant this year, although Dancing Astronaut does not have a Movement of the Year award to present. Therefore, Drumcode is honored to be recognized as Dancing Astronaut’s 2024 Label of the Year.
