Victor Bogopane, known as Doc Shebeleza, made significant contributions to the South African kwaito music scene.
Victor Bogopane, the acclaimed South African musician better known as Doc Shebeleza, has sadly passed away at the age of 51 after a prolonged battle with an undisclosed illness.
A statement from Bogopane’s representatives confirmed that the legendary kwaito artist died peacefully at home on Thursday, January 9, at 10:30 AM. Reports from the day before indicated that he was undergoing yet another surgery, as detailed in a Briefly News article. He had been struggling with his health for an extended period, frequently visiting medical facilities, and his condition had deteriorated in recent months.
In the statement, it was noted, “Doc Shebeleza was a pioneer in the South African music industry, captivating audiences with his infectious energy and timeless tracks, including the legendary ‘Ebumnandini.’ His music brought together generations and created a lasting impact on our cultural heritage.”
Alongside “Ebumnandini,” Bogopane emerged as a prominent figure in the mid-’90s kwaito scene with hits like “Ghets Ghetsa” and “S’kumfete.” Born in Soweto, Johannesburg, he also founded the music group Amaskumfete and inspired numerous kwaito stars, including Mapaputsi and Mandoza.
Bogopane was also committed to philanthropy. He established a charity organization named Amahaha, which focused on building homes for the homeless and providing mobility aids for individuals with disabilities, among other charitable efforts.
South African Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, expressed his condolences in a tribute, stating, “Doc Shebeleza’s passing is a profound loss for South Africa and the entire music community. On behalf of the Ministry, I extend my heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends, and the countless fans whose lives he impacted. South Africa has lost not just a musical icon but a kind-hearted individual whose contributions to our cultural legacy and community upliftment will always be remembered.”
Doc Shebeleza’s death adds to the recent trend of losses in the South African music scene, as noted by the passing of house music and Afropop artist Winnie Khumalo, who also died at the age of 51 just the week before due to a sudden illness.
We at EDM Identity extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Doc Shebeleza during this challenging time.
