Exclusive Interview with Jody Vukas

We had the opportunity to interview Jody Vukas to explore the inspirations, obstacles, and technical skills that shaped his ‘Satellite EP.’ In our conversation, we examined the creation of ‘Satellite’ and ‘Contact,’ gaining insight into his artistic process and vision.

How are you doing, Jody?

I’m doing great, thanks for asking!

What was the initial goal behind your ‘Satellite EP’? Did you have a specific vision in mind?

Interestingly, I didn’t have a goal for an EP until after I completed the second track, ‘Contact.’ Initially, I intended to release the tracks separately. However, as I received positive feedback on both, the idea for the EP emerged.

How do ‘Satellite’ and ‘Contact’ complement each other in the EP? Was this synergy intentional?

I believe they represent a Ying & Yang dynamic in terms of energy and vibe.

‘Satellite’ features a melodic groove accompanied by an emotive lead that evokes a feeling of floating—hence the title.

In contrast, ‘Contact’ has a darker mood with raw-sounding leads and basslines. The bassline that kicks in at the four-minute mark reinvigorates the track, compelling listeners to move.

Can you share a pivotal moment during the production of ‘Satellite’ or ‘Contact’?

Absolutely! ‘Contact’ was initially inspired by Gabriel & Dresden’s “The Clearing,” which left a strong impression on me. I found myself playing around on the keyboard, ultimately leading to the creation of ‘Contact.’

What tools, instruments, or software were crucial in shaping the sound of the EP?

The majority of the creative work was done in Logic, utilizing ANA 2 for many leads and Thorn for pads and bass. These soft synths played a vital role in both tracks.

How did you design the gritty synth layers and shuffled rhythms in ‘Satellite’ to achieve an intense sound?

The magic happened during the mixing phase. I used techniques like parallel compression, combined with compressors such as the Empirical Labs Distressor and EQs like the Pultec EQP-1A. A touch of tape saturation completed the sound.

What influences shaped your ‘Satellite EP’?

The Kite String Tangle is a significant influence for me. Their collaboration with Nils Hoffman on ‘Holding Me Back’ particularly inspired my synth work, leading me to explore similar techniques in my own productions.

In ‘Contact,’ how did you balance the low-end while maintaining a clean mix?

To ensure clarity, I allocated specific frequencies to the kick and bass. I layered the bass to add thickness while managing the low-end. After EQing, I used Softube’s Bus Compressor for the bass and created the kick with Kick 3 software, running it through a dbx160 compressor and adding some saturation for a polished sound.

How do you structure your tracks to keep listeners engaged from start to finish?

Arranging a track effectively is about creating a musical journey for the listener. My experience as a DJ and Producer has given me the insight to know what engages listeners. I’ve learned to overcome the challenges I faced early on in arrangements.

What can fans expect from you in the future?

This year promises to be a breakthrough for me, with significant projects underway and music set to release on larger labels. I’m excited to be touring more, starting with a performance at Ministry of Sound on February 7th, followed by Miami’s Winter Music Conference in March. The possibilities are endless!
