Berlin-based synth trio Dina Summer returns with their sophomore album, Girls Gang, a heartfelt homage to goth and freak culture.
Dina Summer, a captivating synthwave project conceived by Kalipo and Local Suicide, has swiftly garnered a dedicated following within the goth community. Both Kalipo and Local Suicide are well-respected figures in the scene, and their collaboration has proven beneficial for both the band and their supporters.
After their successful debut, the duo’s eagerly anticipated second album, Girls Gang, released via Iptamenos Discos, serves as a lovingly crafted tribute to classic goth, outsider, freak, and weirdo culture. Musically, Girls Gang combines elements of post-punk, synthwave, darkwave, EBM, and synthpop, making it an accessible introduction for newcomers exploring the darker, indie facets of electronic music.
With its “goth 101” vibe, Girls Gang resonates through its soundscapes and lyrics. The title track affectionately nods to pioneering goth band Bauhaus and iconic figures like Morticia Addams, Siouxsie Sioux, Elvira, and Lydia Deetz. The hauntingly beautiful “Alien” serves as an anthem for outsiders, echoing the ’80s electronic music scene with Kraftwerk-inspired sounds.
The album does not seek to redefine the synth genre; rather, it highlights the rich history of synth music that deserves recognition. The track “Halkidiki” evokes the feel of an ’80s retro wave video game, while “Schaull & Rauch” channels classic post-punk vibes reminiscent of Soft Cell and Joy Division.
Dina’s vocals throughout the album further establish her as a significant female presence in the scene, standing alongside icons like Siouxsie, Miss Kittin, and Marie Davidson. Girls Gang may be a sonically average addition to the indie synthwave genre, but its intent and myriad references to the synth goth legends that paved the way for them are what truly deserve recognition.
