Trap Producer VILLA Discusses Her Groundbreaking Concept Series, ROGUE.
The 2010s saw electronic music dominated by big room and trap sounds, with the trap genre merging hip-hop and electronic/pop influences. After a period of overshadowing by future bass and melodic dubstep, trap is experiencing a resurgence. One of the influential figures revitalizing the trap scene is Los Angeles-based producer VILLA.
Since her debut, VILLA has received accolades from trap icon RL Grime and has released tracks through his innovative label, Sable Valley. With an official remix of Alison Wonderland and multiple placements on Spotify‘s Trap Mojito and Fresh Finds Dance playlists, VILLA is establishing herself as a standout talent in the underground music scene.
As trap music evolves, so does VILLA’s sound. Her three-track concept series, ROGUE, breaks new ground with bold and authentic tracks stemming from her personal and artistic experiences. The first two releases, “ONMYMIND” and “ALLNIGHT,” explore a darker and heavier dimension, with the latter featured on Trap City’s YouTube channel.

What inspired the creation of ROGUE?
ROGUE emerged during a creative slump last summer. I felt uninspired by the repetitiveness of social media and new music releases. To reignite my creativity, I pushed myself beyond my comfort zone, experimenting with unique sounds and incorporating my voice. This experimentation led to the formation of the ROGUE tracks.
The term “rogue” signifies going against the grain, and the motto for ROGUE is “a project for those tired of the same old sounds.” This project is an opportunity to resonate with fans through something distinct from my previous work and that of other artists.
As a producer, will fans hear more of your vocals in future tracks?
Definitely. While I may not be a trained singer, I’ve often been told I have a pleasant speaking voice. Recently, I’ve noticed a trend in female speaking vocals within EDM, and as someone who’s enjoyed writing poetry, it’s been fulfilling to incorporate my own lyrics and voice into my music.
How does “LOSECONTROL” serve as the perfect finale for ROGUE?
I initially found myself perceived as a melodic producer. However, as my production skills evolved, I began exploring heavier sounds. I wanted ROGUE to showcase my full potential as a producer, and “LOSECONTROL” is my favorite track, saved for last to truly impress. The theme of “losing control” aligns with the essence of being rogue and defying conventions.
As a woman in the male-dominated trap scene, what does it mean to champion the trap sound?
It’s a significant challenge due to the scarcity of women in the trap genre. I feel a deep sense of responsibility towards gender representation. The lack of women often stems from inadequate representation, so I strive to be a consistent presence in the genre. I aim to inspire young women who aspire to become trap DJs.
How has TikTok influenced your music career?
I have a complicated relationship with social media. Initially, it wasn’t part of my journey, but I learned it’s essential. Like music production, it’s a skill I’ve developed over time, striving for authenticity. Viral moments and recognition, like my remix of Heidi Montag’s “I’ll Do It,” have proven to be valuable tools, but it’s been a learning process.
If you could collaborate with any female artist, who would it be and why?
I would choose Charli XCX. Her album Brat greatly inspired ROGUE and influenced my desire to incorporate my voice. Charli’s ability to create immersive worlds through her music is remarkable, and I admire her evolving sound in collaboration with producer A.G. Cook.
What advice do you have for emerging producers looking to advance their careers?
Persistence is key—if you truly want it, it will happen. Start small, break down your goals, and avoid overwhelm. Focus on genuine connections rather than networking for the sake of it. Remember, artistry is a marathon, not a sprint. The headliners you see today have dedicated years to their craft, and achieving your goals will take time and commitment, so stay the course.
