Armin van Buuren and Maddix have made waves with their first-ever “face-to-face” performance at A State of Trance 2025, and now you can enjoy the entire live set!
For years, DJs have captivated audiences with back-to-back (B2B) performances, offering unique experiences that blend their individual styles. While these B2B sets have become increasingly popular at festivals, Armin van Buuren and Maddix decided to take a different approach at A State of Trance in Rotterdam this year, opting for a “face-to-face” setup instead.
As a legendary trance artist paired with one of the scene’s hottest newcomers, this was their first time performing in this manner, raising questions about how the set would unfold. With the artists positioned apart rather than side by side, communication about track transitions became a challenge. However, during the soundcheck, they established a series of hand signals to facilitate their performance. The results were nothing short of magical, showcasing their ability to synchronize from opposite sides of the stage.
“This was a completely new experience for me, and honestly, I was pretty nervous—playing a F2F is quite different from a B2B,” Maddix shared. “And of course it was in front of a huge crowd and with the legend Armin van Buuren himself. I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out though and I loved every second of it! Our hand signals for every transition worked perfectly.”
I had an amazing time playing face-to-face with Maddix. I’d never done it before, so it took us a little while to find our groove with the hand signals, but once we did, I had an absolute blast. I’d do it again in a heartbeat! Can’t wait to release our collab.
