Andy Williams, known as Yam Who?, was a key figure in the UK disco scene and played a significant role in launching record labels such as Midnight Riot and ISM Records.
Andy Williams, also recognized by his stage name Yam Who?, has tragically passed away at the age of 54 due to undisclosed reasons. His impact on the disco music landscape will be fondly remembered.
The announcement of his death was made public by Phil Rose, known as Jaegerossa, who co-founded Midnight Riot Records with Williams. Rose shared the news on the label’s Facebook page. “It is with a heavy heart that I share the devastating news that Andy Williams – Yam Who? has passed away,” Rose’s post expressed. “Our world feels truly shattered, and no words can truly express this loss.”
He further stated, “Please keep us in your thoughts during this incredibly difficult time. We would appreciate privacy for family and friends as we navigate this profound loss.”
Andy Williams began his DJ career in 1989 and quickly transitioned to promoting events. While disco was his primary focus, he was also known for exploring various dance music genres, including Balearic, acid jazz, and hip-hop.
Initially, Yam Who? was a duo featuring Williams and Des Morgan, but it later became a solo endeavor for Williams. In addition, he collaborated with Tom Laroye as part of the duo Qwestlife, which released music under Defected Records’ Glitterbox label.
Midnight Riot, established in 2012, has released tracks from notable artists such as Amp Fiddler and Robert Owens, and is considered one of Williams’ major legacies. In 2017, Mixmag recognized it as one of “the most influential disco labels of the last decade.” Williams also contributed a column to the print edition of the magazine from 2016 to 2020.
