Aphøtic discusses his rapid ascent in the electronic music scene, the evolving landscape of hard techno and hard dance, and the launch of Synthesis Records.
The contemporary hard techno genre is gaining traction, embracing more aggressive sounds. Artists are flourishing in this latest wave that merges hard dance and techno, often without a distinct bias towards either. Among the influential producers shaping this sound, Dutch artist Aphøtic stands out.
In 2023, Aphøtic transformed the hard techno landscape with the release of his viral track, “Thalassophobia.” This record quickly became a global sensation, exemplifying a new hard techno style characterized by intense screeches and distorted elements. Remarkably, the track almost didn’t get released at all.
It was very unexpected that this track gained so many streams and went this viral. It was one of the first tracks I ever produced and before I released it, I even hesitated because I thought that it wasn’t good enough. Everything after the release happened naturally. I was still studying, so it was a bit hard to combine the study life with the DJ life, but I managed to do both.

“Thalassophobia” quickly became a staple in live performances worldwide. From techno luminaries like Sara Landry showcasing it in her iconic Boiler Room set to EDM superstars like Marshmello dropping it during the Ultra Music Festival mainstage, the demand for this track surged.
For Aphøtic, the support he received in the United States was vital to his success and left him in awe. “I saw DJs like Marshmello play [‘Thalassophobia’] in the US. Those moments made me realize that my career was about to get serious,” he shared.
Since then, Aphøtic has solidified his position in the scene internationally, performing at prestigious events such as UNREAL, Verknipt Arena, and Mysteryland. He is optimistic about expanding his reach to the States, stating, “My team is working hard to get a visa for me so yes, I will be playing for the US crowd soon.”

When discussing prominent events, it’s essential to note that Aphøtic has participated in both editions of the Defqon.1 Weekend Festival that featured a hard techno stage. This was a bold initiative by Q-dance, recognizing the rapidly closing gap between hard techno and hard dance. Despite the predominantly hardstyle audience, Aphøtic maintained his artistic integrity, refusing to compromise his sound.
At Defqon.1 2024, I played a few harder tracks which I always like, but I never truly felt the perfect moment to play them. It was nice because it was possible to play these harder tracks, and I even closed with a Frenchcore record. Of course, I knew people would like the harder style tracks, but I think it’s good that I played my own style. In the end, people made the decision to come to my stage and set, so they knew what to expect.

Aphøtic embraces the fusion of hard dance and hard techno, appreciating the unique blend of styles emerging today. “I think it’s cool,” he remarked. “If it works, it works. Mixing scenes creates opportunities for new inspiration and more unique tracks.” However, he acknowledges the unpredictability of the scene’s future. He believes techno will remain popular but will evolve continually.
I think techno will be more mainstream and it will maybe even blend more with other genres like hardstyle/hardcore. For me, I think I really found my style at the moment, and I will stick to that for as long as possible.

Looking ahead, Aphøtic is thrilled to announce the launch of his new label, Synthesis Records. This initiative is an extension of his artist identity, inspired by the aphotic zone—the deepest part of any body of water devoid of sunlight. In this zone, photosynthesis cannot occur, representing a lack of life.
The label aims to breathe life into the Aphøtic zone. Fans will recognize this concept connects with his hit “Thalassophobia,” which signifies the fear of the dark depths of the ocean. “The label will focus on dark tracks. Primarily, it will emphasize Schranz, but with elements of industrial as well,” he detailed.
For 2025, Aphøtic’s main objectives involve developing Synthesis Records, fostering a strong community, and performing at dream venues and events. There is no doubt he will achieve these goals, and he ended the conversation by offering advice to aspiring producers.
My main advice always is to simply release music. If people like it, you will be discovered. Connections are also important, so try to show your face at events where you want to play.
