Tragic Crane Collapse at AXE Ceremonia Claims Lives of Photographers Miguel Ángel Rojas and Citlali Berenice Giles Rivera
On Saturday, April 5, a devastating crane collapse occurred at AXE Ceremonia in Mexico City, resulting in the tragic deaths of two photographers, Citlali Berenice Giles Rivera, 28, and Miguel Ángel Rojas, 26. The festival organizers promptly canceled all Sunday programming at the city’s Bicentennial Park in response to this incident.
According to The Associated Press, the crane was in the process of lifting a decorative object when it was toppled by a strong gust of wind. The structure fell on Rojas and Giles, who were covering the festival for the media outlet El Universal. Both individuals were rushed to the hospital but were tragically pronounced dead upon arrival.
In a heartfelt statement released on Saturday, AXE Ceremonia expressed, “With deep sadness, we confirm the passing of the two people who were injured during today’s incident. We are deeply heartbroken by this loss.”
The statement further conveyed, “We are reaching out to their families to support them during this incredibly difficult time and to provide them with all our care and solidarity. The safety of our community has always been our priority, and we continue to maintain close collaboration and complete transparency with the authorities.”
On the following day, AXE Ceremonia announced the festival would remain closed to attendees. “Following the unfortunate incident that occurred yesterday, we inform you that it has been decided to suspend the activities scheduled for today, following the guidelines of the relevant authorities. Our solidarity and support go out to their families and loved ones during this painful time,” the statement read.
AXE Ceremonia had featured performances by renowned artists such as Parcels, Natanael Cataneo, and Charli XCX, alongside DJs like Barry Can’t Swim and DJ Gigola. Scheduled performances for Sunday included Tyler, the Creator, Richie Hawtin, Gesaffelstein, and HorsegiirL.
Mexican authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, and AXE Ceremonia’s organizers have announced that refunds will be processed automatically through Ticketmaster.
