Iconic EDM Duo The Chainsmokers Surprise Fans with Frat Party Performance, Cover Fine When Police Arrive

Some things remain constant, including the antics of world-renowned EDM duo The Chainsmokers. Comprised of Alex Pall and Drew Taggart, the pair recently showcased their rowdy persona by unexpectedly performing at a Tempe party hosted by the Arizona State University fraternity Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI), which led to an encounter with local law enforcement.

On Friday, April 18, Pall and Taggart were in town for Breakaway Arizona and decided to drop by the frat party to perform for free. A video montage shared by the duo on Instagram indicates that the police arrived “after 13 minutes” to shut down the daytime, open-air event.

“Listen up: If you are under the age of 21, I’m gonna tell you to leave right now or I’m gonna start writing tickets and start arresting folks,” an officer can be heard warning the crowd as the music paused. The duo had just initiated their 2016 hit, “Roses.”

In a commendable move, The Chainsmokers reportedly contributed to covering the fine to lessen the repercussions on the party’s organizers. “But we paid the fine…” appears in text overlaid in the next segment of the montage. Following this, Pall and Taggart were given a brief opportunity to perform hits like “Closer” featuring Halsey and several recent remixes.

The creators of “Don’t Let Me Down” have been actively working to distance themselves from the wild lifestyle previously associated with them. Reflecting on a 2016 Billboard cover story that depicted the duo as party animals, Taggart remarked in 2022, “I remember reading that and thinking, ‘I can’t believe this is what people are going to think of us,’ and ‘Do we come off this way?’ I don’t want to be this person, you know?”

Unfortunately, The Chainsmokers, you are still seen as those DJs. Nonetheless, kudos for stepping up to soften the aftermath this time around.
