His early tracks, marked by melodic and emotionally rich themes, gained international acclaim. As his artistry matured, Klem’s sound evolved into a sophisticated fusion of French Touch, Soul, Funk, and contemporary dance music, creating a distinct and recognizable sonic signature. Known for captivating tracks like ‘A Night In Paris’, ‘5 Steps Ahead’, and ‘The Cube’, he draws inspiration from a diverse array of artists, including Cubicolor, Jordan Rakei, and Radiohead, as well as the classic grooves of French electro and soulful performances. How has your Spring season been, and are you anticipating the Summer months?
Thank you! I’m genuinely enthusiastic about the launch of My Little Motown — the feedback thus far has been incredibly uplifting, and it truly means a lot. Currently, I’m deeply immersed in the studio, focusing on upcoming releases and putting finishing touches on my forthcoming album. This Spring has been particularly inspiring — the return of sunshine really fuels my creativity.
After stepping away from producing for several years, it feels wonderful to reconnect with the joy of creation. There’s a palpable sense of momentum, and I intend to carry that energy into the Summer.
When did you begin production on ‘My Little Motown’?
The concept for My Little Motown actually originated years ago — a simple loop, a draft that had been dormant on my computer alongside many unfinished ideas. Over time, I found myself increasingly inspired by soul and disco — both the legendary tracks and the more obscure gems. I thought it would be fascinating to blend those influences and explore a sound that merges genres.
That was my goal, especially in the break section — a fusion of the soulful essence of Motown and the rhythmic textures of French Touch. I finalized the track in 2023, with mastering handled by Stardelta Mastering, who did a beautiful job utilizing analog tape to evoke that rich saturation and warmth characteristic of the classic soul era, while maintaining a fresh and dynamic sound.
How would you describe your current sound to our readers?
My Little Motown certainly embraces a Soultronic vibe — a blend of soul-inspired harmonies, electronic textures, and rhythm-driven grooves. However, I’ve never confined myself to a single genre.
As a drummer at heart, rhythm and beat are fundamental to everything I create. Yet, I’m equally captivated by strong melodies and the emotional uplift that nuanced harmonic shifts can provide — often with a hint of melancholy.
Today, electronic music remains my foundation, but I relish exploring the spaces between Deep House, French Touch, and Soultronic influences. There are moments where my roots in Progressive House and Trance emerge — not dominating but leaving a subtle imprint. That sound is still an integral part of my identity.
‘My Little Motown’ represents a fresh artistic direction for you, would you agree?
Absolutely — after my earlier releases on Armada, I feel I’ve undergone significant growth, both musically and personally. While those initial tracks were authentic, I’ve evolved — and honestly, so has the genre. I felt compelled to take a step back for a while. After years of production, I encountered creative fatigue — grappling with writer’s block and the sense of redundancy. That seven-year hiatus allowed me to reset.
Returning to music, I was drawn to a more personal sound. I believe this reflects the current state of electronic music — the boundaries between genres are more fluid than ever. It’s not solely about evolution; it’s about the genre becoming more inclusive and hybrid. This shift has permitted me to experiment with new harmonies, textures, and production techniques that I hadn’t previously explored. EDM still holds immense significance for me, and even if this release diverges from that path, the essence remains intact. Let’s just say… there are some BIG surprises ahead. 😉
What can our readers anticipate from your upcoming album ‘As I Am’?
This album is essentially a response to everything we’ve discussed. As I Am is probably the clearest embodiment of how my music has evolved in recent years — both sonically and in terms of intention.
Listeners can expect a journey from emotionally-charged electronic intros to soul-inspired tracks, culminating in warmer and more uplifting electronic moments. It’s a reflection of the diverse genres I’ve been creatively exploring.
Some tracks have been resting on my Mac for over a decade. Sharing them now — completed, genuine, and unfiltered — is truly meaningful. The album title encapsulates it all. This is me, as I am.
What’s the next single from Klems going to be?
The complete album As I Am is slated for release in Q3 2025, but preceding that, my next single will be Infinite Affection, set to drop in June. It’s an atmospheric Deep House track, heavily inspired by the Anjunadeep sound — warm, emotional, and immersive. It’s another step in my journey, showcasing a different hue of the same narrative.
